Send separate letters or emails regarding Birchgrove and Mort Bay. Council Officers will find that easier to categorise--------------------------------------------------------Re: BirchgroveBasically Option 2 is what we suggested 18 months ago. It gives the surrounds of the oval as off-leash all the time. We probably don't need to say a lot - We think it will just be numbers that count and not necessarily arguments. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample 1Regarding Birchgrove Oval, I strongly support Option 2.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample 2Thank you for allowing me to add my little bit to the review of the LCAMP. I use Birchgrove Park regularly and I love to see all the dogs playing happily. I certainly prefer Option 2 to any of the others because it is fair to all the users of the park and accepts the de facto situation . I signed the petition last year and that was what we all signed for. Unless there is an organized, competitive sporting event taking place on the weekends, I don't see any need for dogs to be on lead even during the middle of the day -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample 3I have looked at the options which you are proposing and I really prefer Option 2. The de facto situation in Birchgrove Oval is that the area surrounding
the oval itself is used as off-leash. This has worked well for the majority
of people that use the park. I would like this situation to be 'legal'. -----------------------------------------------------------------------Re: Mort BayMort Bay is a bit more complex in what they are proposing. At a very minimum I think we should insist that there is a continuous walk from either the Ferry entrance or the Cameron St entrance. To be consistent I think we should argue for what over 4000 signed the petition for and what Taverner Research found was, by far, the preferred option of all Mort Bay Park users - off-lead from the Cameron St entrance around to the old Yeend St wharf. Council Rangers have apparently proposed what is now suggested but I think they see the top of the dry dock (children's play area) as sacrosanct. They want something simple and if the top half of the dry dock remains "no dogs" then it is difficult to draw the lines and enforce. I think we need to argue that the area that kids mostly use is the concrete wharf adjacent to the ferry - if that is actually the case. I don't use Mort Bay enough to really know - but it seemed to be used more for skateboarding and roller blading. The grass area there is fairly flat and would be just as good for ball games as the top of the dry dock I would think. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample 1I think the current proposal is basically workable BUT, and it is a big BUT, there must be a continuous off leash area around the bottom of the dry dock. The new proposal will have dogs off-leash, on-leash for 20 meters, off-leash, on-leash for 20 meters and off-leash as they walk from the ferry wharf through to the old Yeend St wharf and back. It is just not workable without changes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample 2Ref: Review of the LCAMP - Mort Bay I support what the Taverner research found that most park users wanted. The area from Cameron Street to Yeend St to be off-lead. This included the areas to the left and right of the path and the dry dock. The options now being mentioned seem to be likely to make it more difficult for people to enjoy the park. Not even leaving the path around the bottom of the dry dock off-leash seems to be inviting people to ignore the rules. The majority of users of the dry dock now are people letting their dogs play. Socializing of dogs is very important. They don't just need exercise, they need to play with other dogs too - running, chasing, wrestling etc. The dry dock is a great area for this. And the owners also get to socialize. Socialized dogs and happy people - a win-win situation for the community. If you go to the park on any day of the week you will see that few other people use the dry dock area. Children do not normally play there. But, if you have a site inspection, when you have given notice, you may find that children have been rounded up for the occasion. Just come down unannounced and see what the real situation is. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sample 3The proposal for Mort Bay seems to be messing up a workable situation at Mort Bay. Why should dog owners be required to leash their dogs for a couple of meters as they walk past the end of the dry dock. This is a recipe for disaster. There must be an off leash area through the bottom of the dry dock at least. The most workable plan would be for the Cameron St entrance path and the dry dock to be off-leash so people can walk from there around to the bottom of the Caltex site and back. Mostly the dry dock is used for dogs playing anyway. The rangers would only have to worry about two areas to police - one off-leash and the other on-lead or no dogs.
